Termite Season in Texas: When Swarmers Appear and What to Do

By Permian Basin Pest Control · Updated 2026-09-17

Texas has one of the highest termite pressures in the country. Subterranean termite swarms typically start in late February in South Texas and run through May statewide, with a second wave after heavy rains.

Swarmer or flying ant?

Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist and two pairs of equal-length wings. Flying ants have bent antennae, a pinched waist and unequal wings. Piles of shed wings on a windowsill are a strong sign of termites.

Other signs

  • Mud tubes on the foundation or in the crawl space
  • Hollow-sounding wood or blistered paint
  • Doors and windows that suddenly stick
  • Frass (drywood termite droppings) that looks like sawdust or coffee grounds

Why inspect before you see damage

Termites eat from the inside out. By the time you see damage, a colony has usually been feeding for years. An annual termite inspection is inexpensive compared to structural repairs.

Treatment options

We install liquid barrier treatments around the foundation for immediate protection and bait station systems for long-term colony elimination. Both come with annual monitoring. Call (833) 659-0727 for termite treatment anywhere in Texas.
